In the absence of something to blog about, and being rather bored, I pulled a list of suggestions from a website (thanks google) and thought I’d work my way through the ones that appeal or summon up some thoughts.
‘A community I love’ comes first. I’m not sure in which way I should interpret this first. I’m a part of online communities and I would also talk about a real life one.
If we start with online, I think most people are aware of Livejournal. Back in the days where you had to obtain a ‘code’ from an existing Livejournal user, my boyfriend at the time suggested that I start one using his code. So I did. That was March 2003 I believe. So in a couple of months I will have had my LJ for 6 years.
When I started pouring out my life onto the internet, I only had the boyfriend and a couple of randoms on my friends list but now I have whittled it down to a few trusted friends, all of whom I met on LJ and all but one of which I have met in real life more than once. I met a girl who I call my best friend on there. All of these friends were in a Muse community on LJ, and we all know each other from that, even though I met them all separately on there and in real life.
Though I am no longer in the Muse community (I no longer find it fun, but at times juvenile) I still meet up with them occasionally and talk every day.
In real life, in the city I live in, I have what I call my ’Exeter family’. This consists of several friends that I have met through one guy that I met on another social networking site (faceparty, for my sins, no longer on there). We all frequent the same pub, and I live with one of them at the moment. If I hadn’t been on the shameful faceparty then I might never have had my little family. They’re the best bunch of guys you could wish for (and they are all guys), so there’s a real life community I love.
This ties in with ‘Friends I Can’t Wait To Meet’. I have several friends who I have communicated with online but have yet to meet.
The first friend I ever made online, ten years ago, is a guy from the Isle Of Man. I don’t know why we’ve never organised meeting, ties at home and money I suppose, and it’s a bit of a tricky and expensive trip. I’ve never lost contact with him and we send cards at Christmas and remember each other’s birthdays. I used to call him my soulmate because we’ve never once argued and have the same interests. It will be pretty amazing if/when I meet him. I have it planned out that I will go over there unannounced and call him from a payphone once I have figured out whereabouts he lives, and of course they have their own area code so it’ll be funny to hear his surprise at me calling from an IOM number. He knows I am going to do this, I’m not a creep or anything!
I have a friend who lives in Maryland, USA, who I met on LJ. She’s the only one I haven’t met. I’ve been speaking to her for about four years and when I finally get myself over to America, I shall definitely be visiting her.
There’s also a guy in Philadelphia, USA, who I have been speaking to for about 6 months, who I’d love to meet. We get on famously. I don’t think we’ve ever really discussed anything personal, like family etc, but we always have a laugh. We’re both Doctor Who and Heroes fans, so it’s mostly about that. And quotes from Balls Of Steel’s Neg.
